Alternative Treatments

Nutritionists
In the past I have seen a nutritionist. She was able to help me in a way that other doctors could not. Nutritionist are great because they have a totally different way of looking at things, instead of sitting you down and putting you on prescribed medicines and making drastic changes, my nutritionist got me entire health history, gave me supplements to take, and did some tests to see if I was defficient in anything.

The supplements would help with things like sleep, headaches, stomach aches, etc. (Supplements do not require a prescription and can be obtained at any health food store.)

Depending on how multi-dimensional your nutritionist is, they might have skills outside their area. Mine knew about chinese medicine and the diagnosis of illness through just the appearance of the tongue! A doctor with well- rounded knowledge is always a plus.

I was put on a pretty restricted diet, which made me feel a lot better, but which was hard to maintain long term.

I would recommend seeing a nutitionist, especially if your diet is poor or if you are low in a lot of vitamins. They can certainly help you out with this.

Physical Thearpy
I've been seeing a physical thearapist since I first got sick in 2001. PT can be easily misunderstoof as only treatement for those with sports injuries, however, this is false. PT's treat many things, and not just with exercise and strength building- but also with positioning of muscles and tendons.

My PT sees a handful of NMH and CFS patients. He has helped ease a lot of their symptoms during his sessions with them, including me. I can tell the difference when I don't see my PT once a week. I start getting a lot more muscle pain and my fatigue and nausea increases. He definetly helps keep my symptoms managable.

Your doctor might be able to refer you to a PT with experience of your conditions. Preferably, try to see a PT who has expeirince with other teens with your conditions and illnesses. Manual thearpy works best for teens with our conditions. Many times, exercises and working out on the machines is too strenuous for us. I have never used the work-out equiptment, so it's important to ask about this.

Alternative treatments suggested by other sick teens
Ashely: a chiropractor helps her a lot . He manipulates her bones to let her heal what ever is wrong with her body natrually with out drugs and stuff. In her case, he also gives her vitamins and herbs to treat the CFS. Swimming can also help pain from FM and CFS. Going to a massage therapist can also help ease pain. The herb Valerian is used to help people sleep. Melatonin is also good for sleep as well.
